How to Choose a Haircut for Your Face Shape

A practical guide to finding a haircut that flatters oval, round, square, heart and long face shapes — plus what to tell your stylist.

Find your face shape first

Pull your hair back and look straight into a mirror. Compare the width of your forehead, cheekbones and jaw, and the length of your face from hairline to chin.

If your face is about as long as it is wide with soft edges, it's likely round. A strong, angular jaw suggests square. A wider forehead tapering to a narrow chin is heart-shaped. Balanced proportions with a slightly narrower jaw is oval. A face noticeably longer than it is wide is long or oblong.

What tends to flatter each shape

Round faces: length below the chin, side parts and layers that start below the cheekbones add definition. Very blunt chin-length bobs can widen the face.

Square faces: soft layers, side-swept fringes and texture around the jaw soften strong angles. For men, slightly longer tops with tapered sides work well.

Heart faces: chin-length or shoulder-length cuts with fullness near the jaw balance a wider forehead. Curtain fringes are often flattering.

Long faces: fringes and volume at the sides reduce length. Avoid very long, flat, straight styles.

Oval faces: most styles suit you, so choose based on your hair texture and lifestyle.

Your hair texture matters as much

Fine hair often looks fuller with blunt ends and fewer layers. Thick hair benefits from internal layering to remove weight. Curly hair should be cut with shrinkage in mind — what looks right wet can spring up much shorter once dry.

What to tell your stylist

Bring two or three reference photos, including one of something you don't want. Mention how long you spend styling each morning and whether you tie your hair up often. A good stylist will tell you honestly what will and won't work with your hair.
